Elmendorf Tear Tester | A smart instrument developed by the sister company ChiuVention.
The Elmendorf Tear Tester is also called the Pendulum Tear Tester. It is for testing tearing resistance. This is used for conducting fabric tear strength tests. It tests how hard the fabric is to tear. It does this using the pendulum tearing method. The pendulum falls from a certain height. It turns all its potential energy into kinetic energy and cuts the fabric. Then, it measures the force needed for the fabric to tear to a certain length. This force shows how hard the fabric is to tear.
The innovative balance pendulum plate design achieves a higher accuracy for tear testing. The pendulum arm of the ElmenGuide Elmendorf Tear Tester is specially designed. Its center of gravity lines up with the rotation center. This happens when no weights are attached. This results in higher accuracy and reliability of the tear resistance test equipment.
The Elmendorf Tearing Tester complies with ASTM D1424, BS ISO 13937-1, and GB/T 3917.1, and ISO 4674-2. TESTEX also provides other types of Elmendorf Tear Strength Tester.

Principle of Elmendorf Tear Tester
The weight is lifted to a certain height, giving it potential energy. The dynamic and fixed grippers align, clamp the specimen, and the cutter cuts a mouth in its middle. The hammer is swinging down freely. The dynamic and fixed grippers separate fast. The specimen is torn by the energy stored in the pendulum itself. The control system gets the remaining potential energy of the pendulum after the specimen is torn. It calculates the energy used to tear the specimen to find the force needed to tear it.

More about Elmendorf Tear Tests
After wearing, friction thins the yarn. Then, the force breaks the yarn, forming a crack. Fabric tears when a concentrated load acts on it. This tearing is a phenomenon. The fabric’s tearing strength, or Elmendorf tear strength, is important. It is an indicator of the textile. The instrument used to find this index is a fabric-tearing tester. It is more widely known as the Elmendorf Tear Tester.
The fabric tear tester can be used to determine the tear strength of various fabrics. All textile makers need a fabric tearing tester. So do textile testers. It has a simple structure and is easy to use. It has stable test data and many other advantages. Because of this, many industries, such as textile, paper, and packaging, are using it a lot. The difference is that each industry has a different standard of sample making.
The Elmendorf tear tester has related nicknames. They include the Elmendorf tear-resistant tester. They also include the Elmendorf tearing strength tester. They also include the Elmendorf tear strength tester.

What is the Tear of Fabric?
Elmendorf tear definition refers to the phenomenon that yarn inside the fabric breaks one by one and tears the fabric into a crack when a part of the fabric edge is subjected to concentrated loading.
The Elmendorf tear strength of textiles is affected not only by the fabric's properties but also by every finishing process of fiber. According to the actual development requirements of textiles, the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) has formulated a series of textile tearing strength standards (ASTM D1709, ASTM D1938, ASTM D1004 PDF, ASTM D1922 PDF, ISO 6388-2 PDF), and ISO followed these standards.
The tear usually occurs in the process of using military uniforms, sails, tents, umbrellas, hammocks, and so on, and tear strength is the most remarkable ability to resist tearing during the use of fabric. The Elmendorf tear test is a common method for measuring tear strength, which is used to test various international standards according to the Elmendorf tear test formula. Elmendorf test can not only test the tear strength of the fabric but also the tear strength of some plastics and cartons.
Test Procedure
- Prepare samples: Make corresponding samples according to test standards.
- Adjusting pressure gauge: Check whether the pressure gauge value is in the range of 0.6 ±1 MPa, otherwise, adjust the pressure relief valve to meet the requirements. Start the Elmendorf tearing tester, enter the working interface, and set the corresponding parameters.
- Zero adjustments and calibration: Adjust the Elmendorf tearing tester calibration according to the test manual, and adjust the angle, then return to the main page to start testing.
- Sample test: Select a suitable hammer to test all samples and save Elmendorf tear test results.

Calculation of the test result
The calculating tool: standard tearing tester whose pointer displays data showing in the form of a percentage of the total scale, records the value of each specimen, and is accurate to 1% of the full scale on the apparatus. The test result can be calculated in accordance with equation 1.
Ft = Rs x Cs / 100
(1) Tearing force = the number of pointer scales x force value at full scale (Ibs) / 100
(1) Ft = tearing force in the cN (gravity) unit or 1 pound.
Rs = number of pointer scales;
Cs = force value at full scale in the cN (gravity) unit or 1 pound.
Heavy-duty tearing tester whose pointer displays data in force values: records the results of each specimen and is accurate to 1% of the full scale of the instrument. The test result can be calculated in accordance with equation 2.
Ft = Rs x 100
(2) tearing force (Ibs) = scale reading x 100
(2)Ft = tearing force in the cN (gravity) unit or 1 pound.
Rs = number of pointer scales in the unit of cN (gravity) or 1 pound.
Computer processing of data: When the data are processed automatically by the computer, the calculations are generally generated under the effect of the software, and the test results can be read directly from the computer and are accurate to mN (gf). In any case, computer-processed data should be verified by the fabric first whose result has been known, and the software program needs to be described in the report.
Notice
- Before using, place the hammer in place, and tighten the jam hand wheels.

Elmendorf Tear Test Method by the standard of GB/T 3917.1-2009
Mounting the specimen:
The specimen is clamped in the fixture so that the long side of the specimen is parallel to the top edge of the fixture. Clamp the specimen in the center position. Gently place its bottom edge to the bottom of the jig and cut a (20±0.5) mm cut on the opposite side of the groove with a knife (or shear tool), with the remaining tear length of (43±0.5) mm.
Operation steps:
Press the pendulum stop button and release the pendulum. Hold the pendulum when it swings back so as not to destroy the position of the pointer and read out the tearing strength in Newton from the measuring device scale index or digital display.
As different manufacturers may not have the corresponding coefficient in Newton, so the test data needs to be converted into Newton as the unit to display the results after the test results are completed, and the test results should fall within 15% to 85% of the scale used. Repeat the test at least 5 times in each direction
Observe whether the tearing proceeds in the direction of the force and whether the yarn slips from the fabric rather than being torn. A test that meets the following conditions is a valid test.
a) The yarn has not slipped from the fabric;
b) The specimen does not slip out of the fixture;
c) the tear is complete and the tear is always within a 15mm wide groove
Test results that do not meet the above conditions should be rejected.
This method is not applicable if three or more of the five specimens are rejected.
If the agreement requires additional specimens, it is best to double the number of specimens and also to agree on how the test results are to be reported.
Calculated results:
The impact pendulum method directly measures the test results and usually expresses the tear resistance of the fabric in Newton by the force value. The results in other units should be converted to Newtons.
Calculate the arithmetic mean of the tearing strength in Newtons for each test direction, retaining two valid digits.
If required, calculate the coefficient of variation (accurate to 0.1%) and 95% confidence interval, retaining two significant digits, in Newtons.
If required, record the maximum and minimum tearing strength of the specimen in each direction.
Test Notes:
1. Ambient temperature and humidity will affect the test results.
2. The choice of weight range is also important.
3. Each test needs to be zeroed and calibrated beforehand.
4. Each time after the replacement of weights also need to do zero calibration.
Currently, there are mechanical pendulum tear strength testers, digital pendulum tear strength testers,s and pneumatic pendulum tear strength testers in the market, the main principle is the same, the main difference is the way to hold the sample and the way to read the value is different.
