Why we Need the Evaluation of Fabric Pilling?
The assessment result will be largely affected by the test method and the assessment method of pilling. Thanks to the visual evaluation of pilling will be influenced by colors, constructions, lights and optical environment of fabric easily. Therefore, in order to evaluate the specimen of pilling objectively, it uses standard sample antitheses to evaluate the specimen. According to different standards, the sample is different.
Standard Sample Antitheses
Based on extracting of characteristic parameters to the standard sample and physical samples, the conclusion can be obtained that the pilling number per unit area, the total area of the pilling and maximum diameter were significantly correlated with the pilling grade, and this was consistent with the measured value. In view of the fabric fuzz, it can be divided into five grades as pilling grading, and the corresponding pilling grade was evaluated by analyzing the characteristic parameters.
Standard Sample of ASTM
The ASTM standard has produced five standard samples for each method which includes brush pilling method, random tumbling pilling method, elastic packing box pilling method and Martindale method. All of them make different standard samples respectively, from level 1 to level 5. Pilling of the standard sample appears light color with shadow because of side lighting.
