The Significance of Testing the Leather Softness
There are two types of leather on the market, dermis and artificial leather, although the surface of synthetic leather and artificial leather feel like the dermis, the air permeability, wear resistance, and cold resistance are inferior to the dermis. How to distinguish between genuine and fake leather? One of the main methods is to judge its tensile properties and softness. Using a softness tester, we can easily measure these features of leather. This device has now been adopted as the industry standard by the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS) and the method of measurement is now referred to as IUP/36.
Working Principle of the Leather Softness Tester
Clamp the material to be tested on the test hole with known aperture, and then apply a certain load to the leather through a smaller aperture, and the test value is read on the scale pointer. Leather softness tester can measure the softness of leather and animal-fur to find out that whether the softness of the same batch of leather is uniform or the softness of each part of individual leather is different.

The tester supply two Reducing Rings. Each ring has a different sized aperture (25 and 20 mm) so as to enable the measurement of different types of leathers. The TF115A/B Softness Tester can also be used without a ring in position making the aperture size 35mm.
1 Using the calibration plate to let the gauge located in zero position.
2 Pressing the handle downward and pressing the release button lightly, the force used to press the release button should be very light so that the top arm can be upspring.
3 Place the sample (leather) to be measured on the test area so that it covers the bottom clamp.
4 Pressing the handle down so that the probe hide completely and then apply for the force on the top arm so that the upper clamp hold the leather completely, and loosen hand until hearing the sounds.
5 Read and record the softness value of leather.
6 At least test three samples and record the three test results, and then calculate the average value of three test.
