The Index for Evaluating the flame Resistance of Various Materials

The oxygen index means the minimum oxygen concentration required for material combustion in the oxygen-nitrogen mixed gas stream under the specified conditions, which is represented by the volume percentage of oxygen. The oxygen index is high, the flame resistance of the material is good, and the oxygen index is low, the material is easy to burn.

The oxygen index tester is used to evaluate the combustion performance of homogeneous solid materials, laminates, foam materials, films and films under specified conditions.

Measurement Principle of Oxygen Index of Material Combustion

Fix the sample vertically in the glass combustion cylinder, and the base of which is connected with a device for generating a mixed gas stream of nitrogen and oxygen. Burning the sample top,  the oxygen concentration in the mixed flow decreases until the flame is extinguished, at this moment record the minimum oxygen concentration required to maintain the combustion.

Sample Specification

There are six different sample sizes depending on the type of material being tested. For injection molding, it is recommended to use a sample of 80 to 120mm long, 10mm wide, and 4mm thick. Only when the test samples have the same specifications, the test results can be compared with each other.

Instrument Characteristics

1 The bottom of the combustion barrel is connected with the intake pipe, and filled with glass beads with a diameter of 3-5mm. Place a metal net above the glass beads to receive the droplets during combustion, which maintain the bottom of the barrel clean.

2 Using the latest oxygen analyzer technology, provide a stable gas supply mechanism. The digital reading of oxygen concentration is ±0.1%, the test results are more accurate.

3 A special heat-resistant quartz glass tube, and the burning cylinder made of heat-resistant high borosilicate, more durable.

4 The flame height can be adjusted by the valve, and the oxygen concentration displayed digitally, so the operation is more convenient.

The standards of material combustion oxygen index tester are ISO 4589-2, ASTM D2863, GB/T 2406 and GB/T 5454. The following is an example of how to test the oxygen index with standard ISO 4589-2.

Top Ignition Method

For moulding materials, foam materials, thick sheet materials, electrical appliances mouldings and so on, the top ignition method is usually adopted. Mark a line 50mm away from the ignition end, remove the fire source every 5S during the test, and judge whether the whole top surface of the sample is on fire. Remove the igniter immediately after confirming that the top surface of the sample is on fire, at this moment record the burning time and observe the burning length. If the sample cannot be ignited within 30 seconds, increase the oxygen concentration and ignite continue until the sample ignited within 30 seconds.

Diffusion Ignition Method

Diffusion ignition is generally used for film materials. Ignite on the top surface of the sample, the maximum duration of flame action is 30 seconds. Remove the igniter every 5S to observe the sample. Stop the fire source when the sample burns steadily or burns to the mark.
