The Application of ICI Pilling and Snagging Tester TF223

The ICI pilling and snagging tester uses a tumbling test method to test the fuzzing and pilling of fabrics. This apparatus is suitable for the friction pilling test of sparse wool knitted combed fabrics and other pilling-prone fabrics to assess the pilling level of the fabric under stress-free conditions.

ICI pilling tester uses a universal drive system with 2 or 4 positions, an electronic digital counter, and a sample mounting fixture. The machine accepts ICI Pilling boxes and ICI pilling drums.

Test principle

Mount a specimen on a polyurethane tube and turn at a constant speed in a wooden box lined with cork. After a specified number of turns, observe the specimen for fuzzing and pilling, then assess properties.

Test procedure

1 Prepare the equipment and materials for the ICI pilling & snagging test. Such as ICI pilling and snagging tester, polyurethane carrier tube, PVC tape, etc.
2 Pre-treat the specimen according to the agreed method, e.g. washing or dry cleaning.
3 Sampling according to the test standard, measuring 125 * 125 mm and sewn into tubes.
4 Mount the specimen onto the polyurethane tube according to the standard.
5 Carry out the test.
6 Place the specimen in the rating box, record the change in the surface of the specimen and write a test report.

Notes on the use of the ICI pilling and snagging tester

1 Check the speed of the pilling and snagging box regularly and keep it at (60±2) rpm/min.
2 Before using a new liner, it is necessary to rotate it in the pilling box with four blank polyurethane tubes for about 200H until no cork shavings come off the liner.
3 The cork liner should be replaced after prolonged use when the surface becomes smooth or is damaged by contamination.
4 The polyurethane tube should be inspected regularly, especially for dents and roughness at both ends, and replaced if damaged.
5 Before each test, clean the lint and debris inside the ICI pilling box to keep it clean.

Appendix: Rating of change in the specimen surface

5 grade: No change
4 grade: Slight surface pilling or fuzzing
3 grade: Moderate surface pilling, with balls of different sizes and densities covering part of the surface of the specimen.
2 grade: Significant surface pilling, with balls of different sizes and densities covering most of the surface of the specimen.
1 grade: Severe pilling, with balls of different sizes and densities covering the entire surface of the specimen.

What is Fabric Pilling?


In the process of fabric wearing and washing, the fibers of the yarns begin to be loosened under the continuous action of external forces such as friction and washing. When the friction force is greater than the fiber strength, the fiber end of the fabric is easy to reveal the fabric surface, and gradually slip outward from the yarn to form the ring and the villi, that is, the phenomenon of the fabric's pilling. Fabric’s pilling affects fabric appearance and reduces fabric performance. Therefore, studying the cause of fabric pilling has a certain guiding significance for our actual production.

Test Method of Pilling


During the pilling test, there is different test method for different material and use of fabric, however, the design principle is generally used to simulate the pilling process in the actual use of textiles. For example, both Martindale method and pilling box method are aims at European market, random tumbling pilling method is aimed at the American market and circular locus method is aim at Chinese market.

A Brief Introduction to the Pilling and Snagging Test


Specimens are mounted on polyurethane tubes and tumbled randomly in a cork-lined box at a constant rotational speed. Fuzzing and pilling is assessed visually after a defined period of tumbling.

Mount the specimen into a polyurethane tube. Remove any fibers or fluff from the empty boxes  of the machine by light brushing, vacuum cleaning or using a compressed air gun and inspect the cork linings for wear or damage. Then put the specimens into the boxes, ensure all the lids of box must be closed and locked before run. At this time the preparatory work was completed.

Switch power on and then enter the main page. Press the Start/Stop button or any other button to enter the test page. Press the “START” button, the machine will start and the counter will count the revolution. During the test, the operator can press the stop button or power switch at any time to stop the test. And by pressing the test button, the test can be recovered from the place where the test is stopped.

After the preset number of revolutions is reached, the machine will stop automatically. Before removing the specimens from the boxes/drums, ensure the machine is completely stopped. Clean the machine by light brushing, vacuum cleaning or using a compressed air. Reset the revolution counter for the next specimen test.
