Influencing Factors of Button Impact Resistance

The following factors influenced the ability of a button to resist failure under impact conditions: resin formulation, shape ligne size, thickness, number and spacing of holes. Buttons may also pass this test but fail during the pressing of a garment due to the presence of heat during pressing.

Test Range

Test method ASTM D5171 detects the bearing capacity of all types of buttons (diameter above 10mm) to pull or impact during garment manufacture or daily use, it can be used for acceptance test for commercial button shipment and impact resistance test for plastic sewing fasteners.

Test Principle

When testing button hardness, Increase tension load on the button gradually until a crack appears on the button surface. Release a certain mass of pendulum from a certain height to test the hardness of the button.

Test Content

Test Sample: 10 buttons were randomly selected for each test.

Tension Mode Test: Pass the electrode through the hole of the tested button, install the buttons and welding rods on the tension meter, gradually increasing the pressure on the button until the button or handle breaks, record the pressure value. The remaining buttons are tested using the same method to calculate the average pressure and record the maximum and minimum values. The error should not exceed 25% of the average.

Impact Test: Fix the button to be tested on a clamp of the right size and face the pendulum. A button with four holes reveal two holes and a button with two holes reveal a hole. Fasten the button and close the clamp and Install all parts with a screwdriver. Lift the pendulum to the right position according to the size of the button to be measured. Release the handle, release the pendulum, and hit the button. Record whether buttons are broken, or deformed. Repeat test until all button samples are tested.

Testing Report

Buttons for tension mode testing shall be classified as “light” and “heavy” according to their tensile strength and diameter. In impact tests, buttons should not be broken or deformed.

The test report shall contain the following items: button strength, give some comments and recommendations on this standard, and detailed data on deviations using this test method.
