What is Flexing Resistance

Flexing Resistance is a measure index of bending resistance of rubber, leather and coated fabric. Take leather as an example, when people walk, the shoe material will have numerous flexing, which requires a certain flexing resistance of the shoe leather to ensure that the shoe material will not appear cracks and peeling in a certain time, so folding fastness is an important index of upper leather. The leather sample twists and turns on the specified test instrument until the leather surface appears discoloration, raising, crack, peeling and decoating and so on, and we indicate the flexing resistance of the leather by recording the number of twists and turns.

De Mattia Test Method

Principle: Fold the rectangular sample twice to ensure that the long edges converge to form a 125mm*12.5mm strip. Install the folded strip between a pair of plane fixtures, and one of the fixtures moves back and forth so that the folded sample bends back and forth. The folding of the sample will continue until reach the predetermined number of cycles or there is obvious damage on the sample.

Sample making: Select 6 samples from the effective product to test, each with a width of 37.5mm ±1 mm and a length of 125 mm. Among them, 3 samples are parallel to the warp direction and 3 samples are parallel to the weft direction. The sample shall be selected from the uniform part of the product.

Test procedure: Fold twice along the line distance 12.5mm from the long edge of the sample, as shown in figure 1, the width of the sample becomes 12.5mm, and the coating of the sample faces outward. Clamp the folded sample between the pair jigs to make it in a straight state and make the coating in the middle of the sample is subject to the outward folding. Move the fixture by hand, guide each sample to form a broken line around the middle point. Start the flexing tester, and shut down after reaching the specified number of times.

De Mattia flexing tester

Sample inspection: After the test, record the number of flexing, observe the whole appearance of the sample, and evaluate the damage degree of the sample. By comparing the samples with flexing test and without flexing test, record the details of wrinkle, crack, peeling and fading of the samples.
